About Us: Alaska Family Services was established in 1979 to respond to the needs of women and children in crisis in the Mat-Su Borough. What began as a small core of basic services has grown to a broad network of programs, including the only nationally accredited domestic violence/sexual assault shelter in Alaska.
Our Services: We offer a comprehensive array of services for women, children and families in need. OUR MISSION: Providing food, clothing and shelter for those in need. Offering a place where men, women and families can come rebuild their lives and be restored to hope, self-worth and purpose.
Homeless Prevention: Blood-n-Fire also partners with six other agencies to provide homeless prevention. We work in partnership with the Valley Charities, Family Promise, My House, Salvation Army, Day Break and Alaska Family Services to help prevent homelessness. This program offers qualifying applicants with assistance with utility shut-off notices, heating fuel costs, eviction prevention and help with a portion of first months rent. When resources are available we also help with heating fuel, wood heat and gas cards.
Housing Programs: Knik House opened our first transitional living facility March, 2015. Since then we have grown to a multi-site program that has served hundreds of men and women facing homelessness for various reasons. Residents are challenged and equipped to move to stable independence. All while living in a sober, safe environment. Knik House is an 12-18 month program currently housing up to 23 men in one location and 11 women in our second location.

Our Service: Overnight shelter is provided within the facilities of our host congregations.
Hosting duties rotate on a weekly basis with each congregation hosting for one week at a time. In its turn, each congregation provides overnight lodging, meals, and welcoming care.

Located in Palmer this agency provides Mental Health services to Mat-Su Valley residents.
Since 1988, Daybreak has been providing comprehensive case management services to adults seeking to live a complete and largely self-sufficient lifestyle in the Mat-Su Valley. Our initial focus was working with those with a diagnosed mental illness, helping them to engage in their communities by assisting them to find and obtain employment, housing, transportation and other services.
The Valley Reentry Program, funded by the Mat-Su Health Foundation and the Mat-Su Reentry Coalition focuses on reducing recidivism among those people who are coming out of the prison system and returning to society. The program is voluntary and open to those individuals who are scheduled to be released from the Department of Corrections.

The goal of Families in Transition is to promote school stability and academic success for students experiencing homelessness. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Improvements Act, which was reauthorized as part of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2002, is our guidance on determining eligibility and providing services.
